Resting in the giant shadow of 12,953-foot Mount Sopris, Carbondale is “where Rocky vistas meet crystal waters.” Sounds inviting, doesn’t it. Between Glenwood Springs and Aspen, Carbondale’s down-to-earth folks will meet you in the middle. The West Elk Loop, a Colorado Scenic Byway, wanders right through town. And there’s plenty to do outside here, from biking, to kayaking, to world-class fly-fishing.
The Carbondale Mountain Fair, held each July in Sopris Park, will introduce you to the true flavor of this tight-knit community and its artists, as will the annual celebration of Western heritage - the Potato Days Parade. For a detailed history of the area, head to The Mount Sopris Historical Museum, housed in a century-old, two-story log cabin.
Local guest ranches like the Avalanche or Flying Dog are a great way to idle in vacationland. Like an eclectic menu? Chef Mark Fischer creates “random acts of cooking,” including mango-barbecued pork T-bones in his quirky, downtown 689 Main Kitchen and Wine Bar.
